Energy Performance Of Property To Rent Should Be Improved

Landlords are being urged to improve the energy efficiency of their property to let to reduce the burden of energy bills on their tenants.

From 2018, it will be an offence for a landlord to let aproperty with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) below Band E.

Citizens Advice and Friends of the Earth are calling on landlords to improve the energy efficiency of their buy-to-let properties before then, to help slash tenants' fuel bills as energy prices continue to rise.

The campaign is also urging the government to bring forward its deadline from 2018 to 2016, which will bring it in line with the target for the eradication of fuel poverty. Landlords are required by law to hold an EPC.

Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy said: "Rising rent and hikes in fuel costs are busting many people's budgets. So landlords need to speak to their tenants about what they can do together to make their home warmer – and their fuel bills cheaper."

EPCs contain information on a home's energy use and carbon emissions, as well as a recommendation report on how to reduce both of these.
