It is vital for property investment professionals to ensure their homes have regular gas appliance checks, the Gas Safe Register has said.
Speaking in the wake of national Gas Safety Week, Jeff Learman, director of communications at the register, said it is "worrying" that about half the people the organisation recently surveyed do not have annual appliance checks.
According to a study carried out by Gas Safe Register, nine million of the 21 million gas-using homes do not have annual checks, and 1.6 million have never had an inspection.
Of those who do not have regular checks, 37 per cent cited cost as the main reason, while 29 per cent believe it is only necessary if a property needs fixing.
"Clearly cost seems to be an issue," added Mr Learman.
"But would we, for example, go year on year without checking our car to ensure it's safe? We should be doing the same with gas appliances once a year."
