London Student Accommodation Could Be Attractive Property Investment

University accommodation in London is suffering from severe undersupply, Knight Frank has advised, and savvy buy to let investors may be able to capitalise on the huge demand from overseas students.

This week, Savills said prospects for student housing as a property investment are polarising between first class and third class locations.

Director of Savills research Yolande Barnes said this means investors should consider the combination of academic prospects and market prospects at a localised level, looking "beyond pure student numbers to determine viability over the mid to longer term".

Liam Bailey, head of residential research at Knight Frank, opined that the universities experiencing the most growth in terms of student numbers are the ones to watch.

"Investing in and around the London universities has been classed as being quite an attractive option for a lot of investors," he added.

"Similarly, some of the bigger, higher profile universities in the country, like Manchester, Oxford and Cambridge et cetera."
