Northern Towns See The Biggest Increases In Home Sales

Sales of homes in the town of Bury in Greater Manchester have risen by 44% over the first six months of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010, more than any other town in England and Wales.

The four towns that recorded the highest increase in residential property sales since 2010 were Bury, Leigh, Rugeley and Houghton Le Spring, all in the north of England. Leigh in Greater Manchester showed a 32% increase in sales and in the Staffordshire town of Rugeley, home sales rose by 30%.

The substantial increase in property sales since 2010 has been driven by the marked rise in the level of sales of flats and terraced homes.

The favourable levels of affordability in many of the top performing northern towns has helped to encourage housing market activity in these locations.
