Popular Relocation Spots Offer Property Investment Opportunities

Prices of property for sale in the most popular relocation destinations in England and Wales have doubled in the past decade.

Halifax's data on house prices and internal migration shows a 101 per cent increase in the 20 local areas with the highest level of relocations between 2000 and 2010.

This compares to the national average of 96 per cent and a 79 per cent rise for the local authorities which were the largest net losers from internal migration.

The largest lifts were seen in coastal regions, with the East Riding of Yorkshire seeing the biggest increase in internal migration and experiencing a corresponding 127 per cent rise in prices. The region covers the Holderness coast and the area surrounding Kingston-upon-Hull.

Suren Thiru, housing economist at Halifax, added: "The figures also highlight the transient nature of the population in many of our major urban conurbations with the levels of home ownership much lower in the main cities compared to other parts of the country."

The East Riding has a home ownership rate of 80 per cent, double that of Newham (41 per cent), which was the largest net loser in internal migration.
