Rural Property Owners Can Save By Going Green Experts Claim

Buyers moving into their ideal home in the countryside could see their energy bills shrink by insulating their new property, experts have suggested.

Rural properties are often in high demand due to the beautiful scenery, clean air and close-knit communities they offer – but poor energy ratings could prove a deterrent for budget-savvy buyers.

Insulation is "key" to making homes greener, retaining heat and therefore saving money on utility bills, according to UK Energy Saving.

House hunters can even apply for grants to install loft and cavity wall insulation.

The consumer group warns that some rural properties may feature solid walls, which can be more expensive to insulate, but local council schemes may be able to help with costs.

Insulation is not the only green measure buyers should consider before moving into their new home.

Hayley Jones, web marketing director for UK Energy Saving, advised: "Double glazing is also an excellent way to improve energy efficiency.

"Draught proofing ... can make a real difference to a home - as can good thermostatic controls on a heating system."

Turning the heating down by on degree C can have a big impact, the energy expert added.
