Scotland and the north of England could prove sound bets for property investment, as new figures show prices have performed best in the past decade.
Research from Halifax revealed that a huge six in ten of the towns which experienced the biggest rise in price per square metre over the past ten years are in Scotland.
Sitting at the top of the list is Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, which has experienced a 160 per cent increase since 2001. Two more towns in the region, Inverurie and Montrose, completed the top three.
More property for sale could also come onto the market in Scotland in the not too distant future, after housing minister Keith Brown announced £56.7 million in funding for an additional 1,603 new homes.
In England, Carnforth in Lancashire, Wallsend in Tyne and Wear, Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire and Seaham in County Durham were all in the top ten. Halifax believes strong economic growth has helped increase prices in these top ten areas.
The regions experiencing the lowest increases were in Northern Ireland and southern England.
Price per square metre is a good measure of a property's value, as it allows for comparison between different regions and property types.
